M.H. Dunlop
R525 R432 Discovery Miles 4 320 Save R93 (18%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The dark side of the Gilded Age is revealed in this vivid new view of turn-of-the-century New York. Scholar of American culture M. H. Dunlop penetrates the psyche of New York City in the pivotal years made famous by Edith Wharton, the Vanderbilts, and the Rockefellers, unveiling an age that was not genteel and proper but dangerous and predatory.

Drawing on rare primary sources, Dunlop showcases the sensational and surreal events of the times -- from a wealthy society wedding where locals were trampled in their frenzy to watch, to the harrowing nine-hour execution of a zoo elephant diagnosed with sexual frustration, and more. Spiced with cameos of such characters as Stanford White, William Merritt Chase, the Midnight Band of Mercy, and exotic dancer Little Egypt, Gilded City brings to life a key era that saw the city rise to dominance in America.

This illuminating book traces the development of Scottish women's writing in English from its genesis in the late eighteenth century to its flowering in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Hindered initially by the hostility of the Presbyterian Church and the self-serving attitude of the male hierarchy which denied them a proper education, an astonishing number of women found opportunities, in the midst of domestic obligations, to write, and often publish - novels, poetry, diaries, journalism, letters, essays and reportage. Charlotte Waldie and Christina Keith visited, respectively, Waterloo and Flanders in the immediate aftermath of battle. Another intrepid writer, Emily Graves, wrote a memoir of her travels in Transylvania in The Light Beyond the Forest - from which Bram Stoker directly lifted the most blood-curdling elements of Dracula. Others remembered include literary multi-tasker and businesswoman Christian Isabel Johnstone; playwright Joanna Baillie; working-class poets Marion Bernstein and Janet Hamilton; novelist Susan Ferrier; memoirist Anne Grant of Laggan; and writer and scientist Mary Somerville, depicted on the cover, after whom Somerville College, Oxford is named.

'A brilliant, passionate and spellbinding tour de force' Claudia Roden 'Fuchsia Dunlop is one of the world's best writers on Chinese food' Ken Hom CBE The epic tale of the world's most sophisticated gastronomic culture, told through a banquet of thirty Chinese dishes Chinese was the earliest truly global cuisine. When the first Chinese labourers began to sojourn and settle abroad, restaurants appeared in their wake. Yet Chinese food has the curious distinction of being both one of the world's best-loved culinary traditions and one of the least understood. For more than a century, the overwhelming dominance of a simplified form of Cantonese cooking ensured that few foreigners experienced anything of its richness and sophistication - but today that is beginning to change. In this book, the James Beard Award-winning cook and writer Fuchsia Dunlop explores the history, philosophy and techniques of China's rich and ancient culinary culture. Each chapter examines a classic dish, from mapo tofu to Dongpo pork, knife-scraped noodles to braised pomelo pith, to reveal a singular aspect of Chinese gastronomy, whether it's the importance of the soybean, the lure of exotic ingredients or the history of Buddhist vegetarian cuisine. Meeting local food producers, chefs, gourmets and home cooks as she tastes her way across the country, Fuchsia invites readers to join her on an unforgettable journey into Chinese food as it is made, cooked, eaten and considered in its homeland. Weaving together historical scholarship, mouth-watering descriptions of food and on-the-ground research conducted over the course of three decades, Invitation to a Banquet is a lively, landmark tribute to the pleasures and mysteries of Chinese cuisine.

Young Men in Detention Centres Ils 213 (Hardcover): Anne B. Dunlop, Sarah McCabe Young Men in Detention Centres Ils 213 (Hardcover)
Anne B. Dunlop, Sarah McCabe
R5,485 Discovery Miles 54 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1998. One of the most characteristic patterns of recent English penal policy is the rapid spread of detention centres. Any new development of this kind makes it necessary to examine the possible effects of the new measures and to test by reliable methods of criminological research whether the new forms of treatment have led to the desired results. This is particularly so with methods of treatment for which there is no previous parallel. It was from such a proposition that the present study of senior detention centres was undertaken. This study of a senior centre was based entirely on records available at the centre and on evidence of reconvictions obtained from the police and the military authorities. The two centres chosen for the experiment were Werrington House, near Stoke-on-Trent, and Aylesbury Centre, which was adapted for use as a detention centre after the girl's borstal and women's prison had been removed elsewhere.
